An Exciting Few Days In Iceland the ‘Land of Ice and Fire’

We were looking for somewhere different and Iceland is defiantly different. With regular flights to the capital city of Reykjavik with both budget airlines and schedule flights from Manchester getting there is not an issue. A number of tour operators offer short breaks including flights and accommodation in Reykjavik.

Reykjavik is a compact city with lots of character, and so different from cities in the UK. There are many individual shops, cafes and restaurants. You can’t find McDonalds or Starbucks in Iceland but you certainly won’t go hungry or thirsty. It’s refreshing not to see all the major high street chains, though there are one or two. The majority of Icelanders speak excellent English and are very proud of their heritage. They are very welcoming to tourists as this is a major source of the islands income.

With three or four nights in Reykjavik there is time to explore the city and also take a tour to see the major sights which Iceland is so famous for.  We hired a car and driving was not at all difficult but there are also many bookable coach tours from the city.

The Golden Circle is probably the most visited area of Iceland with amazing waterfalls, geysers and Pingvellir Historical Site the location of Iceland’s ancient outdoor parliament.  There is also the famous Blue Lagoon in which you can swim and enjoy the therapeutic waters. See glaciers and volcanoes and marvel at the volcanic rock which covers large areas of the island.

We travelled in mid May and the weather was quite cool, we had bright sunshine and rain, not so very different from the UK. The main season is from the beginning of June to the end of August when the weather is a little warmer and there is less chance of rain, but as the name suggests Iceland is not a warm destination and you need to be prepared for any weather. In the summer months there is almost 24 hours of daylight affording plenty opportunity for sightseeing if you wish.

Iceland really is something special whether you are interested in geology or not you cannot help but be amazed by the landscape.  It is certainly unlike anywhere I have ever visited before.

Let Bay Travel book your trip to this fascinating island and enjoy the incredible natural sights.
