New Zealand & Singapore a Trip of a Lifetime
I travelled with Singapore Airlines to Singapore & stayed for one night in a central hotel taking in many of the sights of this unique island. The rest was very welcome after a long flight and the interesting sights a bonus.
We then set off from Singapore for our overnight flight to Auckland and our visit to both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. In all we spent 18 nights in New Zealand and travelled as far north as Pahia and the Bay of Islands in North Island and South to Queenstown in the South Island.
What a trip! A particular highlight for me was Rotorua and all the Maori culture in the area. We visited bubbling mud pools and spouting geysers in addition to a Maori village where we enjoyed cultural entertainment and a traditional Maori hangi dinner.
The scenery on North Island is splendid and very varied.
The capital city, Wellington is an interesting city and right on the waterfront. There are twice daily sailings from here to South Island. The crossing takes approximately 3 ½ hours and the day we sailed the weather was perfect and the views beautiful.
South Island is more sparsely populated than North Island and again the scenery is beautiful, many people liken it to Scotland and I can understand why. We visited Christchurch which is still recovering from the earthquake in 2011. Many buildings continue to be repaired or rebuilt, it was amazing to see.
Our journey continued south to Queenstown a former gold mining town and a beautiful town surrounded by mountains and situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. This really is a recreational paradise with so much to do from adrenalin sports to gentle cruises and walks plus there are many shops bars and restaurants. We chose to take a trip in a helicopter over the lake to Cecil Peak where we landed and had wonderful views of the surrounding area.
We travelled back up to Christchurch for our return flight with Singapore Airlines via Singapore where we again stayed the night and saw different aspects of the island than on our previous visit, including a visit to The Long Bar at Raffles for a Singapore Sling. Then it was back on an overnight flight to Manchester. Whilst overnight flights are not my favourite I cannot praise Singapore Airlines enough the staff were very attentive and the in flight entertainment very varied with recently released movies to choose from.
This really was a trip of a lifetime plus the hospitality of the New Zealand people really helped to make my holiday very special.
